Since the release of Powell’s debut CD ‘Light’, in early 2009, the Ben Powell Quartet (BPQ) has enjoyed several performances on National Public Radio (USA), and a handful of International Jazz Festival appearances, including the 2009 Tanglewood Jazz Festival Lenox MA, and the 2010 Victoria and Vancouver Jazz Festivals to name a few.

“With a lovely tone, sophisticated lyricism, and a wonderful sense of swing on classics like “Opportunity,” “Tournesol”, “I Won’t Dance” and “Light”, from his CD of the same name, Ben Powell plays swing through modern ears, relishing the genre he “self-discovered” after solid training in classical violin… jazz.com (2009 Tanglewood Jazz Festival).

Committed to finding and writing repertoire that pertains to the violin, the BPQ prides itself on truly idiomatic playing, performing repertoire that is unique to its instrumentation and musicians. In this way, the violin is best understood and appreciated in this uncommon stylistic context outside of the classical genre.

With these perspectives and assumed responsibilities, the BPQ goes about making its musical contribution, further establishing the violin as a leading voice in the jazz scene of tomorrow.
